Bible doctrine 11. Holy ghost baptism.

by Bishop Peter Babalolain Devotional
0 0

Beloved brethren, we come again this morning  to study the doctrines of the Bible.

They are twenty two in numbers.

You as a Bible believing believer, as a matter of compulsion, must be grounded on these twenty two doctrines.

IT WAS A FIRM PARTING INSTRUCTION FROM OUR MASTER AND LORD THAT HIS CHURCH, BOUGHT WITH HIS BLOOD MUST BE TAUGHT, EVERYTHING HE HIMSELF TAUGHT.

Matthew  28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

THE CHURCH ARE THE BRETHREN REDEEMED WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

Acts  20:28

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

IT IS WHEN THE ENTIRE DOCTRINES ARE TAUGHT, THAT, THE ETERNAL WELL BEING OF THE SHEPHERD AND HIS SHEEP ARE SECURED.

1 Timothy  4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

THE EARLY CHURCH IN OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST  TAUGHT THE DOCTRINES, HE HIMSELF TAUGHT.

Acts  2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts  20:20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,

20:26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.  20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

BIBLE DOCTRINE 11: HOLY GHOST BAPTISM

God’s Word teaches:

That the Baptism in the Holy Ghost is the enduement of power from on High upon the sanctified believer.

It is “the promise of the Father” and when one receives this “gift of the Holy Ghost”, it is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking a language unlearned previously, referred to as speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance –

 Matthew 3:11; Acts1:8; Luke 3:16; 24:49; John 1:30-33; 7:7-39; 14:16; 17:26; 15:26; 15:26; 16:12-15; Acts 1:5-8; Mark 16: 17; Acts 2:1-18; 10:44-46; Acts 19:1-6.

Matthew  3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Acts  1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Luke  3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Luke  24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts  2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.  2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

We do not teach or instruct people how to speak in tongues: the Holy Spirit gives utterance.

We also stress the necessity of Purity before Power.

The gifts of the Spirit are for today – 1 Corinthians 12:1- 31; 14:1-40.

1 Corinthians  12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.  12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.  12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;  12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;  12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:  12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

The baptism in the Holy Ghost is the endowment of power from on High upon the sanctified believer.

It is the promise of the Father.

When one receives this gift of the Holy Ghost it is accompanied by the initial evidence of speaking a language unlearned previously, referred to as speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:8; John 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:30-33; 7:37).

We do not teach or instruct people how to speak in tongues; the Holy Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4).

Acts  2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Jesus Christ the great Teacher preached it and promised it. (John 7:37-39; Luke 24:49; and Acts 1:4-8).

John  7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.  7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.  7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Luke  24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts  1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.  1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.  1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?  1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.  1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The Baptism in the Holy Ghost is not the new birth, salvation, conversion or regeneration (John 7:37- 39; 14:17; 17:6-9, 14-16; Luke 10:19-24; 24:49)

. It is not sanctification experience (John 17:9; 17:21- 23; Acts 2:1-4).

Jesus prayed for the sanctification of His disciples and yet commanded them to wait for the enduement of power, the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Moreover, sanctification is for purity whereas the Baptism with the Holy Spirit is for power.

It is not also illumination, feeling of joy, liberty, and victory in prayer, Self-denial or zeal (Luke 24:27, 31-32,44,45; Acts 8:8, 14-17; Matthew 19:27; 16:17).

The Holy Spirit is not a mere impersonal force.

He is not a mere power that we can get hold of and use.

He is not a mere influence that we feel.

He is a person who seeks to get hold of us and use us.

The Holy Spirit is Divine Personality who we must honour, worship, fellowship with, and listen to.

He is called the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of the Living God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Holiness, the Spirit of Life, the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of your Father, the Comforter, the Eternal Spirit (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Luke 11:13; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 3:3; 1 Peter 1:11; 4:14; Romans1:4; Matthew 10:20).

Matthew  28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Luke  11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Hebrews  9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

1 Corinthians  3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

Romans  1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

The Holy Ghost is Eternal, Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Holy.

He is the inspirer of the Holy Scriptures, the general Overseer of the militant Church, the Great Teacher, helper and Guide of all the saints, the Character Builder of all members of the Body of Christ (Hebrews 9:14; Psalm 139:7-10; Acts:10:38; Matthew 12:28; Luke 11:20-22; 1 Corinthians 2:10,11; John 14:17-26; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:22,23;

The Holy Ghost is the third person in the Trinity (1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 4:3-6; Matthew 28:19).

Matthew  28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

The Holy Spirit:

1  Searches all hearts (John 16:8-11; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11).

1 Corinthians  2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.  2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

2  Convicts of sin (John 16:7-11)

John  16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:  16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;  16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;  16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

3  Regenerates (Titus 3:5).

Titus  3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

4  Bears witness with us (Romans 8:14-16).

Romans  8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.  8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

5  Adopts into God’s family (Romans 8:15).

Romans  8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

6  Helps and gives victory in temptation (Romans 8:2,26-27).

Romans  8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.  8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

7  Helps in prayer (Romans 8:26,27; Zechariah 12:10).

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

8  Fills believers with joy, peace, and boldness (Acts 13:49-520.

Acts  13:49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.  13:50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.  13:51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.  13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

9  Sanctifies (Romans 1:4; 5:5).

Romans  1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

10  Quickens and heals our body (Romans 8:11).

Romans  8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

11  Comforts, counsels, and commands (Isaiah 11:1-2).

Isaiah  11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:  11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

12  Intercedes for saints (Romans 8:26,270.

13  Illuminates and inspires (2 Peter 1:21).

2 Peter  1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

14  Searches and reveals the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:9-12).

1 Corinthians  2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.  2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.  2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

15  Teaches (John 14:26)

John  14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

16  Guides into all truth (John 16:13).

John  16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

17  Creates (Psalm 104:30).

Psalms  104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

18  Empowers (Acts 1:8).

Acts  1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

19  Directs gospel work (Act 8:26-29).

Acts  8:26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.  8:27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,  8:28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.  8:29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

20  Confirms the gospel (Hebrews 2:3,4).

Hebrews  2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;  2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

The mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit is promised to all flesh; and those who meet God’s conditions can receive God’s abundance (Isaiah 44:3; Ezekiel 36:25-27; Joel 2:28,29; John 7:37-39.

Isaiah  44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

Ezekiel  36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.  36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.  36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Few (very few) of the Old Testament saints had the Spirit upon them for some special task that the Lord gave them to do.

The Bulk of the Israelites lived all their lives without the “special privilege” of having “the Spirit upon” them.

Even those who had this privilege did not all enjoy His continuous abiding presence (Numbers 11:25; 24:2; Judges 3:10; 6:34; 14:6; 1Samuel 10:9,10; 16:13; 2 Peter 1:21).

Numbers  11:25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

There were great expectations and a “diligent searching” by the Old Testament prophets.

They looked forward to the glorious Gospel days in which we live. Even the angels dared to look into these things.

In as much as Christ’s incarnation, birth, life, dominion, rejection, suffering, meekness, death and resurrection were all foretold and messianic prophecies were fulfilled in every detail, so also all prophecies concerning the outpouring of the Holy Spirit must be fulfilled.

Today, we can all receive the Spirit in baptismal measure.

We can be baptized in the Holy Spirit if:

1  We thirst – have strong desire (Isaiah 44:3; John 7:37,39).

Isaiah  44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

2  We receive “A new heart”, “an heart of flesh”, after removal of “the stony heart”,

“circumcision of heart” (Ezekiel 36:26,27).

(Ezekiel.

3  We have “faith” to “receive” (Galatians 3:2,14; Mark11:22,24).

Galatians  3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?  3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Mark  11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.  11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

4  We pray to receive (Luke 11:13

Luke  11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Beloved brethren, have you received the Holy Ghost since you believe?

Acts  19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,  19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

If you are not, then come ask now.

You must be biblically saved.

You must be biblically sanctified.

Then ask in faith, without wavering.

Luke  11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Received by faith.

Mark  11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

LET US PRAY.
