Beatitude 2. Blessed are those that mourn.

Beatitude 2. Blessed are those that mourn.

Matthew  5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

To mourn is to grieve over our weakness in relation to God’s standard of righteousness and His kingdom’s power

In addition, it is to mourn over everything that grieve God, to have our feelings in sympathy with the feelings of God and to be afflicted in our spirit over the sins and cruelty manifested in the world.

When you realize that you are bankrupt of all spiritual assets that will make you acceptable to God, you will mourn.

This mourning leads to repentance and conversion. It continues throughout the life of the conscientious Christian.

Luke  18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:  18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.  18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.  18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.  18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.  18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

2 Corinthians  7:9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.  7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.  7:11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

Saints of old realized how far they fall short of perfect Christikeness and they mourn over it.

James  4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.  4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.  4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.  4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

We are comforted as our sins are forgiven and then enjoyed continuous communion with God.

But then those who mourn are comforted by receiving from the Father, righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Our Master is very compassionate. He is always close to those who mourn biblically.

Isaiah  57:18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.

Isaiah  61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn

Psalms  30:11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

2 Corinthians  1:4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Romans  14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Pause and ask yourself. Do you mourn for your own shortcomings, when you realized, you have displeased God in anyway. Do you mourn when others sin against God with ignominies.

Remember only those who mourn for their sins and that of others shall receive earthly and eternal comfort.

Matthew  5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted

Let us pray.
