The essence of Christ’s resurrection.

by Bishop Peter Babalolain Devotional

The essence of Christ’s resurrection and persecutions for witnessing it.

Acts  2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:  2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:  2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.  2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:  2:26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:  2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  2:28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.  2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.  2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;  2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.  2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Christ’s resurrection was the essence of Christian faith and our justification.

Glory to God that our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified but He rose triumphantly the third day, as He said.

Matthew  16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Matthew  17:22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:  17:23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

The leadership of the Jews fought against the witnessing of the glorious resurrection of Christ.

Matthew  27:62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,  27:63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.  27:64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.  27:65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.  27:66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Matthew  28:11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.  28:12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,  28:13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

But then our Lord rose up the third day triumphantly.

Matthew  28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Right from the outset of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the disciples witnessed His resurrection and were sorely persecuted.

Acts  4:1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,  4:2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.  4:3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.

However, this persecutions did not deter or weaken the disciples, they kept on witnessing it powerfully.

Acts  4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Acts  10:39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:  10:40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;  10:41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.  10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.  10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Acts  17:18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.  17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:  17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.  17:32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

Acts  24:14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:  24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.  24:21 Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

Acts  26:8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?  26:22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:  26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

Romans  1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;  1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

The one major reason for witnessing the resurrection of Christ was because, it was meant for our justification.

Romans  4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;  4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans  6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Romans  8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1 Corinthians  15:12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?  15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:  15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.  15:15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.  15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:  15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.  15:18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:  15:43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:  15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

2 Corinthians  4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;  4:14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.

Praise God in the same way our Lord rose from the dead, so also the dead in Christ shall rise during the imminent rapture.

1 Thessalonians  4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.  4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

May the good Lord help us to be part of the glorious resurrection and the imminent rapture in Jesus name.

Let us pray.
