Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. – Matthew 5:23
Beloved brethren, by the time our Lord Jesus Christ was returning back to heaven, He commanded that, His followers of all ages and that includes you, must be taught, all that He Himself taught.
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The sermon on the mount, contains the doctrines of the Bible. See this.
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
This was the doctrine of sanctification.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Now, as you come to our present study, it was the doctrine of restitution. See it.
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. – Matthew 5:23
Beloved brethren, remember, every sin, committed by anyone. Is done against God and humanity.
Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
See an instance of what Jesus said. Paul was talking and was rude to the high priest without, knowing. When his attention was drawn to it, he apologized immediately. See it.
Acts 23:1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. 23:2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth. 23:3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law? 23:4 And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest? 23:5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
Restitution means doing work meet for repentance. Meaning, correct your past mistakes against your fellow human beings.
Matthew 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Acts 26:20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. – Matthew 5:23
God requires you in particular to correct your wrong actions in the past.
Ecclesiastes 3:15 That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
This was exactly what Zacchaeus did and Jesus our Lord, during His earthly ministry, commended, him. See it.
Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Beloved brethren, like Paul and Zacchaeus, have you done your restitutions?
If you are, praise God. If not, go and do what Jesus, commanded and be wise
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. – Matthew 5:23
Deuteronomy 32:29 O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!
