Dearly beloved brethren we begin this exploration of faith of the cloud of witnesses and heroes of faith in chapter eleven of Hebrews ,by discovering what exactly is the substance of faith according to the scriptures.

In the first instance remember what the scriptures says about things that were written in the Bible.

Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

The Bible affirms that you in particular a Bible believing believer has so much to learn from these saints of old, who through faith obtained good reports from God.

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

These cloud of witnesses the heroes of faith obtained good reports from God on the account of faith.

Beloved brethren, see where they started, before obtaining the good reports.

They started with substance of faith.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Let us first and foremost amplified it to have a proper understanding.

Hebrews 11:1
[1]NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].

[1]Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

Dearly beloved brethren, so you discover from the amplified versions that, the substance of faith are;

1. confidence, or assurance, you have in God, that what you are trusting Him for shall happen in due course according to His proper timing.

2. It is a firm persuasion and expectation that God will perform all that he has promised to you in Christ and this persuasion is so strong that it gives your soul a kind of possession and present fruition of those things,. It gives you a subsistence in the soul,

3. It is the evidence of things not seen. Faith demonstrates to the eye of the mind the reality of those things that cannot be discerned by the eye of the body.

4. Faith is the firm assent of the soul to the divine revelation and every part of it, and sets to its seal that God is true.

4. It is a full approbation of all that God has revealed as holy, just, and good .It helps your soul to make application of all to itself with suitable affections and endeavours and so it is designed to serve you instead of sight,

5. faith is the testimonies and authority of others whom you can trust.

6. Faith is the great examples you have in the Old Testament of those who lived by faith, and died and suffered extraordinary things by the strength of his grace or faith in God.

7. Lastly faith is the advantages that you have in the gospel for the exercise of this grace above what those who had lived in the times of the Old Testament,

Beloved brethren, to a great extent faith; is essential for success, and certainly for all great achievements

No wonder our Lord said, you in particular, a Bible believing believer should have faith in God or the faith of God, the speaking faith.

Mark 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

How do we know is the speaking faith. See the next verse

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

This is what apostle Paul referred to as Spirit of faith.

2 Corinthians 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

Psalms 33:9
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

Psalms 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

Beloved brethren see the example of Rahab the harlot . How she used the substance of faith to safe her self and her household.

This was what she did, when Joshua sent the two spies, before the conquest of Jericho through God’s unfailing and unchanging timely help. It was a speaking faith.

Joshua 2:9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 2:10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 2:11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. 2:12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token: 2:13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death

Beloved brethren see the realisation of her faith in the God of Israel.

Hebrews 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

Joshua 6:23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. 6:25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

Rahab ended up becoming one of the great grandmother of our Lord Jesus Christ

Matthew 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 1:2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; 1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

Beloved brethren, God is set to make, even you in particular to have a good report through the substance of faith like Rahab and other heroes of faith in Hebrews chapter eleven. See it yourself again.
