Blessed are the merciful.

Mercy for the merciful

Matthew  5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

This beatitude is a reflection of the true identity of Christ faithful followers.

It reveals you have the DNA of your Father in heaven.

There are some virtues that characterize our Father and Christ our Master and Lord.

They are unmerited compassion, mercy and kindness to the unworthy.

God.

Exodus  34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,  34:7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

Our Master.

Luke  23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.  23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

The merciful are full of compassion and pity to those who are suffering and sorrowful.

Mercy is kindness in action.

The merciful sincerely wants to make such suffering less by bringing those people to the grace and help of God, through Jesus Christ.

Those who have received mercy from God should show mercy to their fellow men.

Mercy signify two things. Pardon of injuries and liberality.

Proverbs  11:25 The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

God because of the price Christ our Lord paid on the cross has forgiven us, we must as a matter of compulsion forgive others, no matter what they have done against us.

Matthew  18:23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.  18:24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.  18:25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.  18:26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.  18:27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.  18:28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.  18:29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.  18:30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.  18:31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.  18:32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:  18:33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?  18:34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.  18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Mercy is kindness in action.

Doing good to others after the other of Christ.

Luke  10:30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.  10:31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  10:32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.  10:33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,  10:34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  10:35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.  10:36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?  10:37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Hebrews  2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Mercy is not purchased but earned by showing mercy. This is the gift of God through Christ.

When we show mercy to others we also shall obtain mercy.

Matthew  5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

You develop the  grace for mercy, by following the good example of Christ and replicating it.

Matthew  9:27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.  9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.  9:29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

Mark  5:18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.  5:19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

You relate with others as God in compassion has done with you.

Psalms  41:1 Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

1 Peter  3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

God’s unfailing grace will be sufficient for you.

Let us pray.
