Jesus from the book of Jonah
The Bible from Genesis to Revelation is the revelation of Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 5:39. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
TODAY, WE WANT TO STUDY ATHE BOOK OF JONAH AND DISCOVER OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.
JESUS IS REVEALED AS THE GREAT EVANGELIST.
Jonah 3:1-3 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
Jonah 3:3-5. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
Jonah 3:10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
The book of prophet Jonah gave us a foretaste of the great ministry of our Lord JESUS CHRIST, the great evangelist.
Jonah preached and the whole people at Nineveh trembled at the word of God and repented.
They all received unmerited pardoned and were delivered from destruction.
This same role was done by our Lord JESUS all through His earthly ministry. Going from one place to the other preaching the gospel.
.Luke 4:18-19. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Luke 4:43-44 And he said unto them, — I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
1. CHRIST COMPASSIONATE EVANGELIST WITH A MISSION.
2. CHRISTIANS COMMISSION TO EVANGELISTIC MINISTRY
3. CONVERSION AND CONSEQUENCE THROUGH EVANGELISTIC MESSAGES.
1. CHRIST COMPASSIONATE EVANGELIST WITH A MISSION.
When our Lord was here during His earthly ministry, HE gave himself to evangelistic activities.
However, He had a mission to evangelize the people for them to be converted and be saved.
Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.John 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
John 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.Luke 19:5-6 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. Luke 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, — This day is salvation come to this house, for so much as he also is a son of Abraham.John 4:27-29 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? The woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?John 4:39-41 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word;
John 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Every where our Lord reached to In His evangelistic outreaches, the mission was to get the people saved.
He has left us an example to follow in all our own evangelistic outreaches to have a mission to minister for the people to be saved.
John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.John 13:17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
2. CHRISTIANS COMMISSION TO EVANGELISTIC MINISTRY
Psalms 68:11 The Lord gave the word:great was the company of those that published it.
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
The reason many people are not saved is because, Christians have abandoned the commission of evangelism, The Lord gave us.
Ezekiel 3:17-18 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Ezekiel 22:30-31 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.
Philippians 2:19-21 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. VS 20 For I have no man like minded, who will naturally care for your state. VS 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
It is only wise virgins, that shall be rewarded in heaven, when we get there. One of the things, that will make us wise is reaching out to the lost for the purpose of conversion. Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
One of the examples our Lord left for us was: John 9:4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
When will you begin to evangelize to save souls for CHRIST?
3. CONVERSION AND CONSEQUENCE THROUGH EVANGELISTIC MESSAGES.
When the gospel is preached, two things usually happen. Is either the hearers are converted or reject the word and face the fiery and painful consequence latter.
When Jonah preached, one hundred and twenty thousands people were converted.
Jonah 3:3-5 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
Jonah 4:11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
Unfortunately, today inside and outside the church, many are hearing the gospel but hardened their hearts.
Jeremiah 8:20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
What happens to these people inside and outside of the church that refused the gospel?
Proverbs 1:22-30 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof:behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.Because I have called, and ye refused;I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity;I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: They would none of my counsel:they despised all my reproof.
I will show you an example of such a person, should you also hardened your heart, know that same will be waiting for you in no distant future. Luke 16:19-24– There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
This morning , The Lord has spoken to us on the commission, He gave us. When will you start evangelizing the lost for The Lord? When will you heed the gospel and be converted?
Let us pray.
