Watch out and avoid the hireling.

John  10:12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.  10:13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

John 10:12-13

[12]A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.

[13]The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.

[12]But the hired servant (he who merely serves for wages) who is neither the shepherd nor the owner of the sheep, when he sees the wolf coming, deserts the flock and runs away. And the wolf chases and snatches them and scatters [the flock].

[13]Now the hireling flees because he merely serves for wages and is not himself concerned about the sheep [cares nothing for them].

What then are the attitude of hireling? 

They are merchandisers. 

2 Peter  2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.  2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

They work for their bellies.

Romans  16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

They feed themselves at the expense of the sheep.  They encourage you to continue to sow and be blessed. 

Ezekiel  34:2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?  34:3 Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.  34:4 The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.  34:5 And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.  34:6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

They are greedy. 

Isaiah  56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.  56:11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.  56:12 Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant. 

The blessed Holy Spirit exhorted and warns believers severally on the reality of  hireling. 

They are all out for filthy lucre. Milking the sheep. 

1 Timothy  3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 

 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

Titus  1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

1 Peter  5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:  5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;  5:3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

They are like Demas, they Forsake the sheep for transient things. 

2 Timothy  4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

They are like Judas who gives less attention to eternal things but transient things. 

John  12:4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,  12:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?  12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Attitude of Shepherds 

Care for the sheep. 

Philippians  2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.  2:20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.  2:21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.

Be given for the betterment of the sheep. 

John  10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.  10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.  10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.  10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Spending and be spent for the sheep. 

2 Corinthians  12:14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.  12:15 And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.

Harzaded their lives for the sheep. 

Acts  15:25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,  15:26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

You must determinedly avoid them.

Ephesians  5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.  5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.  5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
2 John  1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.  1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.  1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:  1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
