The danger of lack of knowledge about Jesus

John  7:47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?  7:48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?  7:49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.  7:50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)  7:51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?  7:52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.  7:53 And every man went unto his own house.

It was a pity that these learned Sanhedrin had a wrong knowledge about the background of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But then, it was their fault. If they had properly investigated, they would have known that our Lord was from Bethlehem and He was the prophet, they have been expecting.

They failed to heed the exhortation of the blessed Holy Spirit on the need to grow in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter  3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

They were  destroyed because they lacked knowledge and were determined not to know the truth that can make them free.

Hosea  4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

John  8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

This was the information they needed to know, If they had properly made their findings.

Matthew  2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,  2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.  2:3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.  2:4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.  2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,  2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.  2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.  2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.  2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.  2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.  2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.  2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.  2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.  2:14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:  2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.  2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.  2:17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,  2:18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

If they had known this, they would know Jesus, just settled down in Galiel,  He was never a Galielian, as they claimed.

John  7:52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

In the same token like these Jews, if anyone does not want the truth, then, it would elude such a person.

2 Thessalonians  2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:  2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The truth the leaders of the Jews did not know, were known to many people who desire to know Jesus.

Listen to some of them.

Matthew  16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?  16:14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.  16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.  16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.  16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

John  6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?  6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.  6:69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

John  11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.  11:21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.  11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.  11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.  11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?  11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

But the Jews did not know because their eyes were blinded.

Matthew  13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?  13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.  13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.  13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.  13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:  13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.  13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.  13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Saul of Tarsus was one of them before, but when he opened his heart, he knew Jesus.

Acts  9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:  9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?  9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.  9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

If you want to know about our Lord, you must seek the knowledge about Him.

Hosea  6:1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.  6:2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.  6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Unfortunately, these people did not want the knowledge about Jesus.

Job  21:14 Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.  21:15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

Psalms  10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Psalms  9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

Listen to their undoing. They don’t want to know Jesus.

John  9:27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?  9:28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.  9:29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

John  12:36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.  12:37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:  12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?  12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,  12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.  12:41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.  12:42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:  12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

But then it is good for you to believe Jesus,  for your earthly and eternal well being.

John 12:44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.  12:45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.  12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.  12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.  12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.  12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.  12:50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Believe Jesus Christ and His words and it shall be well with you here and hereafter.

Let us pray.
